Military Hunger Prevention Act Could Expand the Number of Military Families Eligible for Food Assistance

Thousands of military families face food insecurity but many of them are unable to receive federal benefits due to the way in which the US Department of Agriculture calculates eligibility. The new law would require the USDA to calculate service members’ eligibility from their basic pay, rather than considering their basic allowance for housing as part of their income.

Lawmakers Try Again to Change VA Motto

Lawmakers are trying again to change the Department of Veterans Affairs motto to include female veterans. The VA motto, which has been the same for 62 years, is a quote from President Abraham Lincoln’s second inaugural address in 1865: “To care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow, and his orphan.” Representatives Kathleen Rice, D-N.Y., and Steve Stivers, R-Ohio, along with senators Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., and Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, introduced legislation in the House and Senate last week to change the motto. If adopted, it would use gender-neutral pronouns and read: “To fulfill President Lincoln’s promise to care for those ‘who shall have borne the battle’ and for their families, caregivers, and survivors.”

How Your VA Disability Benefits Can Help Pay for Your Dependent’s Education

If you qualify for permanent and total disability due to a service-connected disability, you could be eligible to pass education benefits to your dependent. Under the Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA) program, your spouse or child may be able to get help paying for school or job training. Through this program, commonly known as Chapter 35 benefits, both the dependent and the veteran or service member must meet eligibility requirements under the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
